After the Babylonian exile, many Jews continued to live in Persia, Egypt and elsewhere. This scattering of Jews around the world came to be called the "Diaspora." Esther was a beautiful Jewish woman of the Diaspora who became a queen of King Xerxes of Persia, who ruled hundreds of provences from India to the upper Nile. Esther used her wiles, wisdom and courage to defeat the treacherous plans of the enemies of the Jews, and persuaded Xerxes to give the loyal, hard-working Jews in his lands the protection and privilege they deserved.
