This book starts by taking a fresh look at the history of the church to see where its doctrines of fear and guilt come from. It reveals that for most of its 2000 years Christianity has been corrupt and power-seeking, and has sought to control people through fear. And it has largely ignored the teachings of Jesus. This book shows, for instance, that the belief in everlasting punishment in hell has no honest Biblical basis, but has been read and translated into the Bible since early medieval times in order to control people through fear. Understanding this helps us let go of the deep-seated belief Christianity has instilled in many of us, that God is someone to be feared. Only when we have broken down the barriers of fear can we love God, for love and fear are opposites, and we can't love a person and be afraid of them at the same time.
Having come to the point of rejecting the way Christianity has abused our society, we can make a fresh start and know God the way Jesus did, as a totally loving parent and friend, and go on a fascinating adventure of living with our all-knowing creator and mentor. This starts with us learning to meditate on the "kingdom of God" "within," as Jesus did, and taught us to do. Through doing this we can tune in to God's love, joy and guidance, and the wonderful adventure begins. In Search of the Loving God is a guidebook to this new and loving approach to Christianity.
